What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session
At Healthy Minds Psychology, we understand that your first session can feel unfamiliar — and that’s completely okay. Whether you're reaching out for support with anxiety, life transitions, relationship challenges, or something you’re still trying to make sense of, we’re here to meet you where you are.
Your first session is all about helping you feel comfortable.
Since we offer therapy entirely online, you can join from wherever feels safe and private — whether that's your home, your office, or somewhere in between.
We want to try to help create a space that feels calm, respectful, and free of judgment, so you can settle in and focus on what matters most to you.
You don’t need to come in with all the answers — you just need to show up as you are.
We take time to listen and understand what brings you here!
In your first session, your psychologist will ask a few questions to get to know you and understand what’s been going on in your life. They might ask things like:
What brought you to therapy?
What challenges have you been dealing with?
Are there any goals you have in mind — or things you’d like to explore?
You’re always in control of what you share. We’ll go at your pace, and there’s no rush to open up before you’re ready.
Let’s Explore What Matters Most to You
Many people wonder, “What will we talk about in therapy?”
That’s something we can figure out together.
You and your therapist may begin to identify goals that can include::
* Feeling less anxious or overwhelmed
* Gaining more confidence, self estteem or clarity
* Navigating stress, grief, or trauma
* Improving communication or relationships
* Building Healthier Boundaries with the People in Your Life
Creating Clear and Caring Boundaries in Relationships
The Role of Healthy Boundaries in Strong Relationships
Learning to Set Healthy Boundaries with Others
What Healthy Boundaries Can Look Like in Real Life
These goals can shift over time — therapy is flexible and built around your needs.
Understanding How Therapy Works
During your first session, your therapist will also explain:
* How sessions are structured
* What therapeutic approaches may be used (like CBT or mindfulness)
You’ll also be able to ask any questions about the therapy process, frequency of sessions, fees, or anything else you’re wondering about.
You're Not Alone in This
It’s okay if you don’t know where to start. It’s okay to be nervous.
Your first therapy session isn’t about saying the “right” thing — it’s about beginning a relationship where you feel safe and supported. You’re not alone, and you don’t have to figure it all out on your own.
